Baffin Vacation: Love on Ice.  Proof that ‘Couples That Suffer Together, Stay Together’

When your idea of a romantic getaway involves glaciers, portaledges and 69 days off the grid.

Most people book a holiday to switch off. Sarah McNair-Landry and Erik “Boomer” Boomer headed to Baffin Island to paddle wild rivers, climb big walls, ski glaciers and sleep dangling from cliffs — all while filming it themselves.  Because nothing says “I love you” quite like suffering through spring AND summer Arctic conditions together while hauling camera gear and sleeping suspended on a cliff face.

Welcome to Baffin Vacation: Love on Ice, the adventure film coming to Australian theatres this May as part of the 2026 Banff Mountain Film Festival Tour—a film that redefines “relationship goals”.

Sarah and Boomer will be familiar faces to Banff aficionados, having stared in several films featured on the Banff World Tour.  Baffin Vacation: Love on Ice is the much-anticipated sequel to their 2023 film A Baffin Vacation.  This time the duo is back with an even more audacious goal.

A Very Different Kind of Holiday

Set on the wild east coast of Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic, the film follows Sarah and Boomer on a 69-day human-powered expedition spanning spring into summer. The plan? Packrafts, skis, kayaks, climbing gear, food for over two months — and, because they’re filmmakers, a full camera kit and a portable solar setup to keep it all running.

No crew. No backup. No shortcuts.

They paddle glacial rivers stacked with playful-but-serious rapids, climb remote rock faces where filming becomes a logistical puzzle, and ski down glaciers under huge Arctic skies. It’s type-two fun at its finest — the kind that’s hard in the moment and golden in hindsight.

Filming While Hanging Off a Cliff

Self-shooting an expedition is never easy, but Baffin Vacation: Love on Ice raises the stakes. With only two people, filming meant constant trade-offs: one climber, one belayer, one camera… and zero margin for error.

Some moments were pure magic. Like the second river they paddled — “everything we could have asked for,” with fun, challenging rapids rolling one after another beneath a hanging glacier. Or summiting Broad Peak in perfect weather, then skiing back down with endless Arctic views.

Others? A little more chaotic.

While attempting to hand-catch a drone mid-climb (already a bold move), the propeller sliced Sarah’s finger “several times down to the bone.” Cue a retreat, a forced rest, and a hard-earned lesson. They went back for round two — successfully — but Sarah has made one thing very clear: no more hand-catching drones.

Fair.

Love, Ice, and Equal Partnership

What makes Baffin Vacation: Love on Ice shine isn’t just the terrain — it’s the relationship at the centre of it. Sarah and Boomer move through the Arctic as equals, sharing decision-making, risk, joy and responsibility. The film quietly celebrates trust, communication and humour — because when things go sideways in a place like Baffin, those matter as much as strength or skill.

Sarah’s connection to the landscape runs especially deep. She grew up on Baffin Island and now splits her time between the Arctic and Idaho’s Teton Valley. Boomer grew up in Idaho and now does the same, bouncing between expeditions and filmmaking projects. It’s a way of life that suits Sarah, Boomer and their relationship perfectly.

Cold Places, Warm Energy

Despite the ice, glaciers and big objectives, Baffin Vacation: Love on Ice is anything but heavy. It’s playful, honest and full of small moments — laughter in camp, problem-solving on the fly, the quiet satisfaction of moving through wild places under your own power.

It’s also a reminder that adventure doesn’t have to be solo or serious to be meaningful. Sometimes it’s about sharing the load, trusting your partner, and choosing the long way around simply because it looks more interesting.

Big Screen, Bigger Adventure

Baffin Vacation: Love on Ice is the kind of film that deserves to be experienced on the big screen, surrounded by fellow adventure enthusiasts who understand the appeal of Type 2 fun. It’s got whitewater, climbing, skiing, stunning Arctic landscapes, genuine moments of vulnerability, and proof that the best relationships are built on shared suffering and mutual respect—plus the occasional heroic drone rescue attempt.

Baffin Vacation: Love on Ice is screening as part of the 2026 Banff Mountain Film Festival Tour of Australia, rolling through cinemas nationwide this May.

If you love wild places, big days, slightly unhinged expeditions and stories that make you laugh as much as they inspire — this one’s for you.

Grab your tickets, rally your adventure crew, and join us in theatres this May to experience Baffin Vacation: Love on Ice on the big screen.
